Thursday 11th April 2024

A major airstrike by Russia has caused damage in several regions of Ukraine. The attack aimed to inflict more damage on the country’s power facilities and caused power outages for more than 200,000 people. Ukraine has stated that the Trypilska thermal power plant in the north of the country has been destroyed in the attack. (Reuters)

Russia’s Foreign Minister has advised its citizens against travelling to the Middle East, stating Lebanon, Israel, and Palestinian territories as those to avoid. (CNBC)

US President Joe Biden has stated that Israel has “ironclad” support from the US amid fears of an Iranian response. (BBC News)

Russia launched a drone attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, with some drones hitting the Dnieper Hydroelectric Station in Zaporizhzhia, causing a fire and causing half a tonne of oil products to leak into the Dnieper River. (Reuters)

Canada has committed to sending $132.2 million in humanitarian aid to help people who have become displaced by the conflict in Sudan. (Global News)

The European Union has pledged 1 billion euros in financial aid to Egypt in an effort to help stabilise the country’s economy. (Reuters)

Iran has launched its anticipated airstrike on Israeli military bases in Iran, Iraq, Syria, southern Lebanon, and Yemen in retaliation for Israel’s attack on their consulate in Syria days before. (ABC News)

Israel has said it has found the body of a 14-year-old shepherd in the West Bank, with Israel’s Prime Minister calling the death “heinous murder.” A Palestinian man was shot dead overnight in the search for the shepherd. (BBC News)

Iranian state news claims guards have seized the MSC Aries vessel, which is, according to them, “linked to Israel.” (Reuters)

Six people have been killed in a stabbing attack at Bondi Junction Westfield shopping centre, close to the famous Bondi Beach. The man carrying the blade was shot by a lone police officer who was tracking him. (The Guardian)

Heavy rain caused flash flooding in areas of Afghanistan, killing at least 33 people and injuring a further 27 others in three days. Around 600 homes were damaged or destroyed, and around 200 livestock died. (AP)

Cyprus has suspended asylum applications from Syrians as more than 1,000 people have arrived since the start of April amid high tensions in the Middle East. (Reuters)
