Today Rishi Sunak visited Israel exactly one day after U.S. President Joe Biden concluded his 7-hour visit to the region amid heavy fighting between Hamas and Israeli forces in and around the Gaza Strip.
In a press conference with Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem, Mr Sunak promised the United Kingdom would stand with Israel and its people against ‘evil’ Hamas. He would later go on to welcome Netanyahu’s decisions to ‘ensure that routes into Gaza will be opened for humanitarian aid to enter’ Following this, he stated that he was ‘glad’ Netanyahu made the decision and said that the UK would not only support this but will increase aid to the region.
World leaders such as Rishi Sunak and Joe Biden have visited the region to try and help defuse the situation and prevent it from spilling out into the wider region. The United States has also placed two carrier strike groups in the East Mediterranean, including the USS Gerald R. Ford carrier, which is the world’s largest by all measurements, to deter any major escalations that may happen as a result of the intense fighting.
As of right now, around 20 trucks are waiting to enter the Gaza Strip via its southern border with Egypt. Even before the war began, the people who called the region home struggled to get by with the little food and water they had. The conflict has only exacerbated this problem. The aid trucks are now needed more than ever before.
After his visit to Israel concluded, Rishi Sunak headed off to Saudi Arabia, where he met Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman. On X (formerly Twitter), the prime minister said, “We agreed on coordinated action to prevent further escalations in the region, provide vital humanitarian aid in Gaza, and provide support, both now and in the long term.”
No matter how you look at it, Rishi Sunak is clearly passionate about the situation, as far as we can tell, and at the end of the day, he wishes for peace, as do many of us. But as with all conflicts, only time will tell, and each day will present new information in this ever-changing situation.
