Storm Babet has been relentlessly battering the UK for over a day now, and with the prevailing weather warning, it appears that a challenging weekend lies ahead for all of us, especially those in towns such as Forfar, Stonehaven, Montrose, and Arbroath. These areas are expected to receive a substantial 250mm of rainfall over the next 12 hours, spanning from 18:00 on Thursday to 12:00 on Friday. Residents in these areas have received advisories to stay indoors and are strongly encouraged to avoid all non-essential travel. Moreover, some residents have already been evacuated from their homes due to the issuance of a red weather warning, signifying a significant threat to life.
From Friday to Saturday, a substantial portion of the Pennines has been placed under an amber rain warning. Numerous regions throughout the UK are preparing for the full impact of the storm. Meteorologists are forecasting a minimum of 100mm of rainfall on the highest peaks.
It’s crucial to note that the time lag between the peak rainfall and the peak discharge of the region’s rivers could extend to approximately 24 hours or more. Consequently, the risk of flooding will persist well into the weekend.
